Ok, I might be jumping the gun here (I just auditioned for them), I just auditioned for a movie (which is opened to union/non-union) and if I get the part, they say (prod. company) "star rates" neg. How much is that? Or if I get the part, let my agent handle it? So far, I only did the sides for them, and I also did a dramatic monologue. I haven't gotten to callbacks yet, or if I'll be skipping the callbacks altogether, and be given the part (they're suppose to contact me in a few weeks.

The way you describe it, this project sounds as thin as a two-dollar suit ("union AND non-union"?). In any case, your representative will be handling all the contractural issues for you (rate of pay, work dates, etc.). But you're getting way ahead of yourself. You haven't even booked the role yet!
Incidentally, any film role that would dispense with call-backs wouldn't even be even be worth considering. Something to think about.

If I make it past callbacks, I'll let my agent handle or ask her for help. What would be the SAG rate for a lead? Getting paid film work up here (other than extra work) is hard to come by, most of it is unpaid that I've noticed. It's suppose to be film here, and in Europe. The first call they had for the charater was back in the late fall of last year (they changed the requirements for the character).

Are you SAG? you can go to the sag site and see the rates. If it's under the low budget contract it's $100/day. Regular rates don't depend on "lead" or not; rate is around $700/day under the regular contract.

I'm not SAG yet, at least up here, you don't want to join any union, until you have to. It will kill your chances to be in alot of projects (I heard more than half).I do see union actors up here doing non-union stuff (paid). They just didn't say how much you're getting, if you get the part. All it said were star rates neg.

Star rates? That will apply only if you are an actual star and your agent negotiates a higher rate, whatever that may be. If they can use both union and non it must be a low-budget agreement like a ULB. Then the SAG would get like $100 a day and the N/U wouldn't get paid.

It's probably then going to be $100 a day, unless,I get my agent to neg.The character's scenes will also be shot overseas too, in europe (if I get the part).

Nope, the low budget contract pays $504/day Modified low budget is $268/day. Ultra low budget is $100/day.

Picky picky picky! Low, ultra low, yikes! I have to go reread Bonnie G's column on this.
Yes, I'm guilty of being a stickler for very, very accurate information. A lot of people read this stuff online and they tell others as fact in many cases. On a 2-day contract the difference between low and ultra low is $808.

That's exactly what it sounded like to me. If you're non union, there's a very good chance you won't be paid at all, even if you're one of the leads. I've heard cases of this. Just wanted to warn you in advance, so you're not too disappointed if that's how it ends up.

Thanks for the info. I would think that they would have to have a good size budget because of the shooting here and in europe. They wanted the actress, who's playing the part, to have a valid passport.
