I recently have been given the opportunity to get some good head shots done for a great price however my hair is quite different than i usually have it. It is longer and slowly growing out. I usually have my hair short.Im not growing out my hair for anything special, just for a change. If i get head shots done now with my hair like this do you think it will affect me if I happen to change my hair again and want to use these head shots? I just do not want to waste money. Also should I stick to one hair style for this reason? Thank you so Much!

If you can afford to have headshots with different hair lengths, that's great. Then you can use the ones that fit your current look. If these are your first headshots, then have someone take a good snapshot of you when your hair is shorter again, to attach to your longer-hair headshot so whomever you are submitting to will see your current look. Also, if you submit with the longer hair, add a note that you are willing to cut your hair if necessary for the role you are submitting for. You always have options.

BTW, are you getting your hedshots done in MI? If so, would you mind sharing (or PMing me) who you are going to? I have a friend who is looking for a good headhsot photographer in MI. Thanks!

Just remember that, the hair the casting director sees in the headshot, is what they'll expect to see when you go in to audition. Walking in with different hair won't necessarily be the kiss of death every time, but there are definite instances. If you're auditioning for a cop (on one end), or a rockstar (on the other), not having the same hair as the headshot that got you called in could immediately diminish your chances of booking the role.

And yes, I realize you can always cut your hair (or grow it out if time permits) if your hair at the time of the audition isn't what they're looking for. But production rarely goes through all that with someone who isn't a "name talent." Besides, there will be plenty of people walking in who already have the exact look they want. So, they won't have to play the "what if" game with someone who doesn't immediately look like what they've envisioned.

So, you definitely don't want to kill the first impression by looking other than you looked in the photo that got you called in.

It's really important that you look like your headshot. If your change of hair drastically changes your look, you have to stick with the same hair or change your headshot.

This episode of Everything Acting: http://www.everythingactingpodcast.com/?s=redanty&x=0&y=0

is full of good info on this topic and Roz specifically asks the hair question.

You really must look like your headshot!! Casting directors are busy people and value their time. They want to look at a headshot and see the same person when you walk in the door. They will not take the time to evaluate what you may look like with shorter hair. If they are casting for a role with shorter hair--your headshot will be tossed without a second thought. I would stick with one look, it may make a big difference on weather or not you get work.

Good luck!
