My daughter has had voice lessons for 6 years, and we are looking for a both a teacher and coach for Saturdays in NYC. We haven't been able to find one, and for the past year, she's used her music teacher at school who prefers Bel Canto style singing. She does not like belting at all. My daughter does both styles, and is also interested in pop, but this teacher does not have a repetoire that can take her where she ultimately wants to be. She belts safely, and she'd like to start building her repetoire for auditions and college. The only way to get into the city would be on Saturdays since we moved a year ago and live about and hour and a half from the city.

Would we need to get a separate voice teacher more to her needs and then a coach or keep the teacher at school and just get a vocal coach. She also writes her own songs and has composed music for them on garage band. We just bought her logic studio for the mac as well.

Many thanks!

Hello! I have two teachers that I have been promoting to my students - I have worked with both of them so I can recommend them personally and think they are fabulous!

Carolann M. Sanita- http://www.CarolannMSanita.com

Anita Vasan- http://www.VasanVocalStudio.com

Many singers choose to use two different people for technique and coaching, but sometimes you can find a teacher who does both. The ladies above are excellent voice teachers and focus on vocal technique in the musical theater genre, which includes both belt and legit styles of singing. But they are also professional actors and are intimately familiar with the audition process, which makes them great vocal coaches as well.

It is a good idea to meet with both of them to see which might be a good fit for your daughter. And please feel free to tell them I sent you- they are wonderful people and will love the referral!

Hi there!
I love my vocal coach, Stephen Purdy.

www.mahattanvocalcoach.com

He tailors each lesson to fit whatever I want/need to work on at that point, whether it be breathing and support, belting, or a specific pop or Broadyway song for an audition. He always makes me feel comfortable (I have a big problem with nerves when I'm singing), and has really helped me progress. His prices are really good, too, and he has time slots available pretty much any day of the week, from what I've seen. Good luck!

I LOVE Tim McDevitt, my voice teacher. He's the first person that's given me a real understanding and awareness of how to use my voice. Quite a few of his students have had significant success, both on Broadway, and in other types of music. His email is tdmcdevitt@gmail.com. Don't be distressed if it takes him a few days to get back to you...he's worth it!

Without a doubt, David Sabella-Mills is FANTASTIC. I've studied with him for several years, and he's so thorough, empathic, and clear. You can learn more about him at www.sabellamills.com, the website for his association.
