I have training in "legit" theatre but I need some vocal/musical training to get my foot in the door of summerstock. I can sing, but I need discipline. Anyone recommend a good coach/class that is reasonably affordable in NYC?

Mat Eisenstein is a Bway Musical Director and Vocal Coach/Teacher. He has many students on Broadway. I highly recommend him. I take from him. His music library is very extensive and a great guy too.

Here is his website.

just to add - there are significant differences between voice TEACHERS and voice COACHES - teachers build the voice itself through technical behavior; coaches work on the music.

I agree. Mat Eisenstein is a coach, not a teacher. If you have no vocal training, a good teacher is the place to begin with voice.

If you have good training, a coach can assist you with vocal material.

Children can coach - musicianship skills - but the actual voice cannot build physically til well into the teens. As the voice does not reach maturity until late20s/early30s and sometimes later depending on the voice type - the "training" of the voice has to be so very careful as the muscles in the child singer are not in any way ready for development. Learning deportment, musicianship - piano lessons, music reading etc etc is much more important at this point! Hope that helps!

IMHO If your child is doing any kind of public singing - they should be working with a voice teacher.

if they are doing public singing they should be working with SOMEONE who deals with children's voices - but do not get trapped into "Training" as the muscles and the voice cannot have the intensity of training til later...musicianship, phrasing, pitch, vowel formation etc etc YES. I have seen such damage done to young voices when they aren't treated like young voices.
