It was several years ago that I heard of this, but I was told that you can have your vocal chords altered to produce a better sound. It sounds sort of asinine but I was wondering if there was any truth to it.

Any surgery will result in scar tissue. My wife is a Speech Pathologist and would recommend vocal surgery in only the most profound cases.
NO, vocal surgery will not improve voice unless it was medically necessary.

Yes, well I certainly wouldn't recommend having someone go in there and alter my vocal chords to simply make them sound better either, lol.

I was just interested in feedback about it, I read online a little and all of the results I got were for transgenders... *shrug*

I say KEEP AWAY from such thoughts.

You could wind up sounding worse.

Even sinus surgery could have adverse effect.

Yes, I know that. I'm looking into it for myself, I was just curious about whether or not it was possible, has or would anyone go to that length...

Vocal surgery for ANY reason is a risk and only if it is the final and last choice!

I have NEVER heard of healthy cords being changed through surgery for a better sound - if the cords are healthy there is nothing you can do except DEVELOP the voice for a better sound.

I have worked with trans-gendered voices and I have never heard of laryngeal surgery, as hormone treatments will make the necessary changes to the voice.

^ Only if you're a ftm transsexual, the mtf transsexuals sometimes go to surgery to raise their voices. Often enough it actually destroys the voice.

It's a gamble.

In my experience I have worked only with Male to Female and they have just worked with hormones.

The mtf transsexuals' voices do not change with hormones, since the vocal cords already grown into male status. They require speech therapy and practice to develop a female voice, or surgery. The hormones only affect what can be change, not what is already done.

Wouldn't many men voices become higher after puberty after their testosterone decrease, especially the elderly.

So it just works for ftm because their vocal cords can grow and develop into a man, and hormones do the most affect for them.

how interesting...I have always found the estrogen to soften to the cords to some degree to allow a less masculine sound with vocal work. I will have to research this more fully with the ENTs and laryngologists I work with.

It truly is fascinating work.

I agree. Too many people forget their individuality is what makes them unique and marketable. Too many cookie cutter wanna bees in the entertainment world out there.

Unless it is necessary for medical reasons, I am completely against surgery of any kind.
