For those of you with home studios - are you working with an agency to obtain work? Is there a site like Backstage that lists opportunities?

Voice123 is a good site for finding work on your own.

I've been hearing some good things about Voices.com too. I'll have to try it out.

There are a few sites:

Voice123
Voices
VOPlanet
VideoVoicebank (the equivalent of Breakdown Services - agents access only)

I ended up signing up with Voice123 after several recommendations -- other than VideoVoicebank which you need an agent for, Voice123 supposedly gets the most audition notices.

I'm in the early stages of my voiceover career, and it's a bigger investment than most people realize.

For example -- all these sites charge a hefty fee to join ($295 a year).

Training is also more expensive than traditional acting classes.

Next, you basically should get a home studio that can record professional quality VOs for auditioning and production -- now, it's certainly a fraction of what it used to cost say even 10 years ago, but you still need to invest in microphones, a recording interface/preamp, and basic recording software -- which will set you back in total around $1,000-$2,000 (depending on the mic and recording interface/preamp + software).

Recording quality matters, no matter what people say (much like production values matter for your acting demo reels).

My recording studio cost less than $600 well $2600 if you include a macbook.

The best software for voiceover that is easy and good enough is Audacity which can be downloaded for free.
