Have you noticed that whenever they try to re-make ("improve") a great old movie, it's always a dud?
Madonna tried it on "Swept Away" and the critics stopped laughing only long enough to crush it. They did it with Hitchcock's "Pyscho" and it never made a dime. They just did the same thing with "The Day The Earth Stood Still," and before the print even dried it was already on cable. Even Spielberg met his Waterloo on "War of the Worlds."
Why don't producers finally get it? Not matter how many CGI visuals and sound effects they add to their hyped-up and watered-down imitations, it's impossible to improve upon a classic.

I just saw my most anticipated movie last night. District 9. t was totally awesome...very well thought out, written and made. So far my favorite movie of the year by a landslide..
Other than that..hmmmm...
Inglorious Basterds
Machete (not so much for Lohan and DeNero...But Steven Segal and Danny Trejo as the insane lead!)
Antichrist
Iron Man 2
9/Shutter Island/Halloween 2/A Serious Man - Tie
Oh, and I wouldn't say all remakes are bad! The Fly is profound!! Hills Have Eyes and Willard were pretty great as well. And most people don't even now that Scarface and The Departed are reamkes!
1.Alice in Wonderland 2.The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus 3. You Dont Know Jack (Al Pacino playing Dr. Kevorkian...need I say more?) 4.Batman 3 5.Sherlock Holmes
I know theres more but that all i can think of right now.

Yeah, I think it's better to remake a movie that wasn't really a classic (I didn't know that there was an older version), but around that time Gone with the Wind is a classic. They cannot make a remake of that... but with a non-classic they can.
Now if they make a double remake of Scarface of the "more modern" version than that wouldn't be as big as the one with Al Pacino.
Some movies are untouchable, while others can be remade. I don't think The Birds is a true classic in a sense, like epic classic, plus it has Naomi Watts!

There are exceptions, but they are few and far between.
The Fly remake was excellent, due in no small part to the superb portrayal by Jeff Goldblum. The remake of Scarface with Pacino bears few comparisons to the original (the moniker "Scarface" was a direct allusion to Chicago's Al Capone-- a far cry from the Cuban crime wave of the 60's). This is usually the case-- the remake bears little resemblance to the original.
When you count the huge number of remade flops, these are clearly the exception, proving the rule.
